All you need to run a FabLab

We regularly get asked questions such as "How many participants do you have per week and month?" or "What are your human resources to explore FabLab?" or "What are the comments about the FabLab concept?". Instead of answering all these emails individually, we've pulled together the facts here. If that is not enough, please get in touch through this site and we'll get back to you.

How many participants do you have per week and month?

Expect your lasercutter to be fully booked as soon as you let people access it ...

What age bracket most participate in the FabLab? What are their education?

Expect to get people from all walks of life to knock on your doors. Certainly, the majority will be young and well-educated. But don't be surprised by the odd granny with an electronic embroidery project or a disabled person wanting to improve their wheelchair or a president.

What are the comments about the FabLab concept?

What are your human resources to explore FabLab?

Expect something in the area of EUR 1000 / day in costs running a FabLab. Half of it is amortisation of equipment, the other half mainly staff cost.

Do you have any partners like universities, school, local authorities?

Every FabLab – like any other social enterprise – needs a large network of stakeholders. Schools and universities certainly make good partners, as do other social enterprises and initiatives. Local authorities can be another source of support and are able to open up their network to local labs.

What are the FabLab facilities dimensions?

Fablabs come in all shapes and sizes. However, a fully-equipped, decent lab should not be significantly smaller than 100...150 m2.
